The Joshua Hendy Iron Works is a window the industrial portion of the region's history. The Iron Works built heavy mining equipment and steam engines for ships in addition to almost anything that could be crafted out of iron. It was originally located in San Francisco but was heavy damaged by the fire following the 1906 earthquake.

Joshua Hendy started California's first redwood lumber mill shortly after sailing around Cape Horn to San Francisco Bay in 1849. In 1856 he founded the Iron Works to supply Gold Rush miners with equipment and soon became a leader in the industry. The original works was destroyed by the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
